The power of cloud computing

Cloud computing has today become the phrase du jour. The term cloud is used as a metaphor for the Internet and is an abstraction of the complex infrastructure it conceals. The ‘Cloud’ simplifies the many network connections and computer systems involved in online services. Any user with an Internet connection can access the cloud and the services it provides. Since these services are often connected, users can share information between multiple systems and with other users.

The term came from the cloud symbol that network engineers used on network diagrams to represent the unknown (to them) segments of a network. Marketeers further popularized the phrase ‘in the cloud’ to refer to software, platforms and infrastructure that are sold ‘as a service’, i.e. remotely through the Internet. The major models of cloud computing service are known as software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and infrastructure as a service (IaaS). These cloud services may be offered in a public, private or hybrid network. Google, Amazon, IBM, Oracle Cloud and Microsoft are some well-known cloud vendors.
